Promotional magazine by commercial and editorial photographer, Mark Peterman
Posted in Print Portfolios / Promos by D. Currier | Tags: magazine, photographyNicely designed promotional piece by commercial and editorial photographer, Mark Peterman.

Here is a brief description of the piece:
“At the Mecca is a narrative story driven magazine style promotional piece based around my cinematic lifestyle photography. This is the first printed piece that I have done as a promo besides postcards and in addition to my printed portfolios.
I had it printed through MagCoud, who does on demand magazine printing. That way I
don’t have to do a large press run and have a ton of copies I will never use. I wanted the piece to be a mix of a promo, a catalog and a fine art piece, I definitely feel like it works on all those levels.” – Mark Peterman

USB Drive promo
Posted in Print Portfolios / Promos by D. Currier | Tags: object, photography, promotionCheck out this promotional piece by RAINA+WILSON. It’s functional and it looks great too.
http://www.rwphotographic.com/
About the Promo
Wilson had this to say about the project -”We wanted to create a direct mail piece that was more useful than the standard printed promo. We noticed art directors using USB drives to transfer files between computers and thought it would be a good way to get a digital portfolio into their hands. We had branded USB drives produced with our logo and web address screen printed on each unit and loaded with a PDF version of our portfolio. The drives were attached to a recycled paper backing board and stamped with the words ‘Review, Reload, Reuse’ A perforated detachable business card was part of the final piece as well, and everything was sent out in a biodegradable clear bag.
500 pieces were sent out to a targeted list of past clients as well as people in the industry who’s work we admired but hadn’t worked with yet.
We had immediate positive feedback. Lots of calls and emails from art directors and art buyers. Requests for quotes. Web site hits up 200%. Almost a year after sending out we’re still getting emails asking for more!”

On Press with Dan Busta
Posted in Print Portfolios / Promos by D. Currier | Tags: newspaper, photography, self-promoWhat a lot of time and effort went into this high quality newspaper promotion by photographer, Dan Busta. It’s a great idea for an out of the box portfolio. Check out the final product and images of the process below. Also, Dan had graciously offered to send anyone a copy who wants it. Contact him via his website at http://danbusta.com/.
Dan had this to say about the project – “About seven or eight years ago while I was studying graphic design I got into Stefan Sagmiester. At the time he had designed this great promo/lookbook for Anni Kuan. It consisted of a black and white large fomat newsprint book, essentially a newspaper. I loved it and obviously translated it to my photography work. I though it would be amazing to create a promo on this medium.
As time went on my interest has always been high making this newspaper. I even started seeing people using it more and more including another photographer, Cheyenne Ellis, Mykita Eyewear, and Roxy Clothing (Who has hired Cheyenne before, Connection .. Maybe)
So with that short history said I finally found a press and have commenced work on the Newsprint Portfolio Promo Piece. I was a bit concerned about what work to feature in the book. In the past I was working on a fashion newspaper with some poetry to go with along side large format fashion shots. That migrated into a portrait newspaper featuring worldly environmental portraits. Now finally my work has matured and so I decided to use a series I have been working on (on and off) for about 5 years. That is the Uniform series. All portraits from all scopes of life, photographed simply in front of a teal backdrop.”

Design Assignment: Create Your Own Manifesto Book

This past spring, I challenged my junior design students to create their own unique design “manifesto” books. There were some intriguing results. One of which was the following, by Endicott College graphic design student Meredith Lindsay.

Noah Webb’s Passport Book
Posted in Print Portfolios / Promos by D. Currier | Tags: photography, portfolio bookI really like this idea by photographer, Noah Webb for a passport book of photographs. Especially since the photographs are relevant to the concept and taken while visiting the Italian cities stamped on the front of the book. The concept really informs the body of work, contextualizes and enhances its meaning. The book itself looks and feels just like a real passport, except of course for the wonderful photographs inside which are individually cut from ‘contact prints’ made directly from the medium-format negative film. Simple Messages/A Unique Approach by Alexander Kara
Posted in Print Portfolios / Promos by D. Currier | Tags: brand, poster, self-promoThis promotional campaign by designer Alexander Kara really caught my eye. The stark simplicity of the black text as bold message on a white background makes reference to the power of advertising copy and a simple poster – brought to life in the context of a more subversive “post no bills” propaganda style environment. The final promotional poster is also visually intriguing and certainly represents a unique conceptual idea.
When I asked Alexander about the project, this is what he had to say:
The aim of the project was to produce more than just a business card; an idea of collaboration between client, designer and the world around us, we need all these components to create an appropriate and successful design. The poster series was to display how simple messages can be effective in the world, in turn, enforcing the original concept.
Stickers were used for my contact details, for a practical and economic sense; my details (and i’m sure many other designers) tend to change (address, phone number), therefore this approach will ensure that the cards have a longer lifespan than a traditional approach.

Impressive Student Portfolio Package from Designer Sean Ball
Posted in Print Portfolios / Promos by D. Currier | Tags: design, portfolio book, self-promo, student portfolioThe intention of a portfolio design is to present you as having a visual character, to differentiate you from the average creative and make you stand out – supported by your own unique creative vision and the work you have done to prove yourself. That’s just what designer Sean Ball has done with his promotional materials and portfolio.
Sean says, “This is a project done for my senior capstone class [at Oklahoma State University]. We were tasked with creating our own self promotional materials: business cards, resume, and a way to present our portfolio. I wanted something eye-catching, so I opted for some slick metal CD cases from American Digital. My resume, card, and a digital portfolio were placed inside, then cases were wrapped with a label. The design for this was also carried over to my portfolio book.”

“This is the second part of my self promotional project. We were asked to create a large format portfolio book to take to future interviews. This is a fairly large book, measuring at 11″x17″ for each page. Each project included has a large image, project description, design brief, an explanation of my solution, and project detail shots and images.”

Portfolio Process: Time-lapse by Photographer, Jeremy Bales
Posted in Print Portfolios / Promos by D. Currier | Tags: portfolio book, videoDedication and craft – building your own portfolio book is certainly a labour of love. And I have to give anyone who takes it on a lot of credit for seeing it through. Like photographer Jeremy Bales, who recently shared this time-lapsed video with No Plastic Sleeves.
He says, “When I set out to make a full-bleed book, mounted and trimmed by hand I had no idea that it would take so much effort: making sure my prints would line up, carefully making cuts, scoring and folding gently. But the more I put into the project, the more I realized that the custom, one-of-a-kind nature of the book would be strikingly apparent to anyone who viewed it. The process became a weekend-long practice in zen. It’s one that I look forward to doing again when the time comes.”

Finding Inspiration: Brady Fontenot’s New Promotion
Posted in Print Portfolios / Promos by D. Currier | Tags: photography, poster, self-promoYou never know when inspiration will strike. But for the visually curious, there’s no shortage of things to inspire. Recently, photographer, Brady Fontenot found inspiration in a tire shop in New Orleans.
I asked Brady about his recent promotion and this is what he had to say –
“This tire shop is in New Orleans and I’ve been sort of mesmerized by it for the longest time. Finally stopped by one day and talked to Mr Joe., the owner, about taking some photos. He approved and of course these are the results. I had all these great photos and I have a friend who is a really amazing designer so I asked him about doing a piece with them. His name is Nessim Higson and he runs a successful design studio called IAmAlwaysHungry(IAAH). He’s the one who came up with the initial poster concept and the packaging. The idea behind the greasy packaging and the stamping and all of that was to draw you in and hopefully make the viewer feel at least a tinge of what I feel every time I ride by St Claude Tires and what I felt while I was hanging out there taking pictures. Also, it’s not in the pictures but, a note will be included w/ each promo sent out and those will be written on order slips like you would get from a tire shop or mechanic or similar. We want the viewer to feel like they were at the shop. The difference in this poster arriving in a plain envelope versus the made up ones we did is huge in my mind. In terms of appealing to creatives who are in position to hire me it will hopefully give the impression that I pay attention to the details, am willing to go the extra mile to do it right and am able to collaborate with others to complete a project.
Ness actually had me go back and shoot details of signage and other things at the shop so we could incorporate that into the design. He then took that and had stamps made from some of the signage which is what you see stamped on the envelope. One stamp says “No Cash Refund” another says “No Loitering, No Crack Selling, No Cat Selling. NOPD Will Be Called” and the third is “ If You Don’t Work Here Don’t Hang Here.”
These are being used in a couple of ways. Posters w/ envelopes are being sent to creatives to solicit meetings while I’m in New York for the summer and just as general promo pieces. We are also placing them around New Orleans at the tire shop and various boutiques and coffee shops and what not as give aways.
As of now we are working on a second poster and are planning to continue to do one every few months.”

Scratch & Sniff Promotion Campaign & Video
Posted in Digital Portfolios, Print Portfolios / Promos by D. Currier | Tags: photography, videoMelissa Hennessy of Hennessy Represents recently shared their unique direct mail campaign & a very funny short spot they created to help promote the campaign. Definitely memorable.

Melissa had this to say about the project –
“In the 6 years I’ve been an agent we’ve sent out everything from postcards to water bottles, to expensive multi-page books, etc., hoping to make the “keep” pile of creatives. What seemed to be a hit were our scratch n sniff postcards- a single image card, with no plastic sleeve, & a one inch circle that invited you to “scratch here.” So with our second print run, we thought why not put out a teaser video? It could announce the mailing date so creatives could be on the lookout, and we’ll play off of the interactive nature of the sniff/scent circle & the types of things creative receive in the mail. We’re really poking fun at ourselves, but saying we understand how much stuff is sent out. The feedback so far has been very positive & we’re glad that it’s being viewed as something purely meant in jest, with no suggestion that plants of any nature inspire creativity

Portfolio of Michael Winokur
Posted in Print Portfolios / Promos by D. Currier | Tags: book construction, photography, portfolio bookWhen it comes to designing and constructing your portfolio it’s tough to do it all yourself.
There’s just so much that goes into the creation of a successful portfolio book, not to mention a website and other materials. Often you’ll need to solicit some help from experts in a particular area. However, you still need to be as informed as possible about the process and the components that will shape the “look and feel” and direction of your portfolio. That way, when you do ask for help, you’ll be able to not only find the right people to suit your needs, but also to participate in a dialogue about just what you want.
And that’s exactly what photographer, Michael Winokur did when it came time to create his own portfolio book.
In his own words,
I don’t remember how I heard about Nicole Andersen Book Arts but I remember being very impressed with Nicole’s craftsmanship, style and attention to detail. This was quite a few years ago when she still had her business in Oakland. (Sometime later she moved and turned her business over to her associate, Eriko Yahiro.)
When I first went to Nicole to talk about building a portfolio I had a few ideas, I knew I wanted WINOKUR embossed on the cover, I knew I wanted the prints to be 11×14, and I had these mini-portfolios that needed a home along with the main book. What Nicole provided on that visit was as much a brand consultation as a portfolio making service. I had been talking about my work as fresh but classic, she knew just what that looked like and showed me colors and materials that supported my work beautifully. Those two sets of portfolios – the first from Nicole Andersen Book Arts and later a second identical copy from Yahiro Book Arts – still look fresh and classic today and still support my work many edits and refinements later. I wish it was easier to get face-to-face meetings these days because it’s so great showing big prints in a beautiful hand-made portfolio.
A few notes about the portfolios:
- The shipping case was custom made by Tenba based on one of their other case designs.
- The Sage green and black that Nicole suggested for me have been my “corporate” colors ever since and find their way into all my collateral.
- When Nicole originally made the post-bound book for me there weren’t very good choices in double-sided printing papers. My first book was bound by mounting front and back sides together with spray glue and using linen tape for the hinges. Now I print double sided, leave a margin for the hinge and make holes for the posts with a hand hole punch – much easier.
- The 5×7 mini portfolios represent recent projects, so they provide for a different kind of editing than the main portfolio which shows a variety of work.
- The mini-portfolios are very simple, and affordable to make, they are photo prints, spray-glued together and then cut and wire-o bound by my local print shop.”
