Finding Inspiration: Brady Fontenot’s New Promotion

Posted in Print Portfolios / Promos by D. Currier | Tags: , ,

You never know when inspiration will strike. But for the visually curious, there’s no shortage of things to inspire. Recently, photographer, Brady Fontenot found inspiration in a tire shop in New Orleans.

I asked Brady about his recent promotion and this is what he had to say –

“This tire shop is in New Orleans and I’ve been sort of mesmerized by it for the longest time. Finally stopped by one day and talked to Mr Joe., the owner, about taking some photos. He approved and of course these are the results. I had all these great photos and I have a friend who is a really amazing designer so I asked him about doing a piece with them. His name is Nessim Higson and he runs a successful design studio called IAmAlwaysHungry(IAAH). He’s the one who came up with the initial poster concept and the packaging. The idea behind the greasy packaging and the stamping and all of that was to draw you in and hopefully make the viewer feel at least a tinge of what I feel every time I ride by St Claude Tires and what I felt while I was hanging out there taking pictures. Also, it’s not in the pictures but, a note will be included w/ each promo sent out and those will be written on order slips like you would get from a tire shop or mechanic or similar. We want the viewer to feel like they were at the shop. The difference in this poster arriving in a plain envelope versus the made up ones we did is huge in my mind. In terms of appealing to creatives who are in position to hire me it will hopefully give the impression that I pay attention to the details, am willing to go the extra mile to do it right and am able to collaborate with others to complete a project.

Ness actually had me go back and shoot details of signage and other things at the shop so we could incorporate that into the design. He then took that and had stamps made from some of the signage which is what you see stamped on the envelope. One stamp says “No Cash Refund” another says “No Loitering, No Crack Selling, No Cat Selling. NOPD Will Be Called” and the third is “ If You Don’t Work Here Don’t Hang Here.”

These are being used in a couple of ways. Posters w/ envelopes are being sent to creatives to solicit meetings while I’m in New York for the summer and just as general promo pieces. We are also placing them around New Orleans at the tire shop and various boutiques and coffee shops and what not as give aways.

As of now we are working on a second poster and are planning to continue to do one every few months.”

Scratch & Sniff Promotion Campaign & Video

Posted in Digital Portfolios, Print Portfolios / Promos by D. Currier | Tags: ,

Melissa Hennessy of Hennessy Represents recently shared their unique direct mail campaign & a very funny short spot they created to help promote the campaign. Definitely memorable.

Melissa had this to say about the project –
“In the 6 years I’ve been an agent we’ve sent out everything from postcards to water bottles, to expensive multi-page books, etc., hoping to make the “keep” pile of creatives. What seemed to be a hit were our scratch n sniff postcards- a single image card, with no plastic sleeve, & a one inch circle that invited you to “scratch here.” So with our second print run, we thought why not put out a teaser video? It could announce the mailing date so creatives could be on the lookout, and we’ll play off of the interactive nature of the sniff/scent circle & the types of things creative receive in the mail. We’re really poking fun at ourselves, but saying we understand how much stuff is sent out. The feedback so far has been very positive & we’re glad that it’s being viewed as something purely meant in jest, with no suggestion that plants of any nature inspire creativity :-)

Portfolio of Michael Winokur

Posted in Print Portfolios / Promos by D. Currier | Tags: , ,

When it comes to designing and constructing your portfolio it’s tough to do it all yourself.
There’s just so much that goes into the creation of a successful portfolio book, not to mention a website and other materials. Often you’ll need to solicit some help from experts in a particular area. However, you still need to be as informed as possible about the process and the components that will shape the “look and feel” and direction of your portfolio. That way, when you do ask for help, you’ll be able to not only find the right people to suit your needs, but also to participate in a dialogue about just what you want.

And that’s exactly what photographer, Michael Winokur did when it came time to create his own portfolio book.

In his own words,
I don’t remember how I heard about Nicole Andersen Book Arts but I remember being very impressed with Nicole’s craftsmanship, style and attention to detail. This was quite a few years ago when she still had her business in Oakland. (Sometime later she moved and turned her business over to her associate, Eriko Yahiro.)

When I first went to Nicole to talk about building a portfolio I had a few ideas, I knew I wanted WINOKUR embossed on the cover, I knew I wanted the prints to be 11×14, and I had these mini-portfolios that needed a home along with the main book. What Nicole provided on that visit was as much a brand consultation as a portfolio making service. I had been talking about my work as fresh but classic, she knew just what that looked like and showed me colors and materials that supported my work beautifully. Those two sets of portfolios – the first from Nicole Andersen Book Arts and later a second identical copy from Yahiro Book Arts – still look fresh and classic today and still support my work many edits and refinements later. I wish it was easier to get face-to-face meetings these days because it’s so great showing big prints in a beautiful hand-made portfolio.

A few notes about the portfolios:

  • The shipping case was custom made by Tenba based on one of their other case designs.
  • The Sage green and black that Nicole suggested for me have been my “corporate” colors ever since and find their way into all my collateral.
  • When Nicole originally made the post-bound book for me there weren’t very good choices in double-sided printing papers. My first book was bound by mounting front and back sides together with spray glue and using linen tape for the hinges. Now I print double sided, leave a margin for the hinge and make holes for the posts with a hand hole punch – much easier.
  • The 5×7 mini portfolios represent recent projects, so they provide for a different kind of editing than the main portfolio which shows a variety of work.
  • The mini-portfolios are very simple, and affordable to make, they are photo prints, spray-glued together and then cut and wire-o bound by my local print shop.”

NY Photo Festival 3D coverage project

Immerse yourself in the NY Photo Festival, May 2010

Press Release
“International Photo Festival Turned Into Virtual 3D World – Using an innovative technique, the event is being captured and turned into a 3D online display, allowing anyone to visit at any time, even after the actual event is over.

The New York Photo Festival (NYPH), the first international photo festival in the United States, is among the first organizations to employ an exciting new method to bring their event to the entire world. The festival, which showcases the future of contemporary photography, gets underway May 12th in the DUMBO (“Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass”) section of Brooklyn. But for the second time it will also be captured and rendered as a 3D online world, available to virtual visitors anywhere and at any time via the Web.

The 3D “coverage” is being executed by DUMBO resident Martin Lenclos. Lenclos creates 3D online experiences of actual events, through the interplay of photos and video interviews, all set in an evocative 3D representation of the event’s environment. Soon after an event begins, a virtual version is launched, which those interested can then visit and explore, both contemporaneous with those attending the event live, or at any point thereafter. The rendered 3D world immerses visitors in the environment of the event, and vastly expands the number of people who can experience it.

In association with BOX Creative LLC, a New York-based design firm, Lenclos has been developing the Flash-based application since 2008. Lenclos calls this 3D coverage “a new journalistic and artistic model for the representation of events, designed for proliferation throughout the web.” Like YouTube videos, the completed multimedia piece can be embedded in Websites and blogs, greatly expanding the potential exposure. Event organizers provide partners and interested media with a simple embed code for easy sharing.”

Chris Bohnhoff’s New Portfolio

Posted in Print Portfolios / Promos by D. Currier | Tags: ,

Photographer Chris Bohnhoff recently submitted photographs of his new portfolio to No Plastic Sleeves. He also shared a bit about the process he went through creating it, starting with the most crucial part – critical assessment.

In his own words:

Last summer I made a commitment to myself to step up my photo game: to find a small team of people who could help me critically assess where my portfolio was and where it could be, then to create a set of materials that would communicate to the creative world who I am as a photographer and what I can do. That process never ends. Interests, co-creators, and creative styles evolve and grow, and so do portfolios. But as of this month, with the arrival of my new portfolio and the kick off of my postcard campaign, I feel a small sense of completion after ten months of serious work.

Here are a few shots of the new book. It’s actually two books within one slipcase, organized like my web site, with stories in one book and portraits in the other. It’s hard to do get a full appreciation for the book without handling it – the cover material has a metalic texture and sheen, but a super soft, highly pet-able feel. The color palette is warm, understated and professional, and contrasts in such a cool way with the vivid green spreads that introduce each section.

I’m really excited to get out in the marketplace and show it off. Many thanks to everyone involved in its production.

Where Are They Now: Anthony Georgis

Posted in Digital Portfolios, Print Portfolios / Promos by D. Currier | Tags: , , ,

About a year ago my co-author, Larry Volk, contacted Anthony Georgis about including his compelling promotional book, “Blood Makes the Grass Grow” (a photo essay about the high school girl’s rugby league in Portland) in our book. The project’s website can be found here: http://www.bloodmakesthegrassgrow.com/.

A few weeks ago Anthony emailed to let me know about a cool new project he recently completed – Levi’s “Go Forth” campaign. He also created a stand alone website for the project which won him a feature in this month’s PDN Photo Annual.

I asked Anthony if he would share a bit about the Levi’s project and what he’s been up to since “Blood Makes the Grass Grow.” This is what he had to say:

The past year has been really amazing. I had been getting quite a bit of interest in my work based on my photo essay “Blood Makes the Grass Grow” about the high school girl’s rugby league in Portland. It was really rewarding to get noticed for something that I’d shot as a personal project and it was nice to have that translate into some assignments. One of the clients I started working with on a regular basis is Nike. I’ve been shooting with them quite a bit and that’s pretty much a direct result of the rugby project.

I also got commissioned to shoot a really unique project for the Levi’s Go Forth campaign. It was basically a dream job. The assignment was a completely unscripted 30 day road trip across America. Levi’s wanted the shoot to have a spontaneous feel so there was no producer, no schedule, no crew, and no models. It was just me and a camera and a writer friend who did interviews along the way. It was a truly amazing and humbling experience. I created a stand alone website for the project that got into the PDN Photo Annual and I’m in the process of printing a custom portfolio book of the images.

I’ve been working on a couple personal projects that have to stay under wraps for now, but that I’m really excited about. If I’ve learned anything in the past year, it’s that you just have to keep working on the things you’re truly passionate about, and everything else will fall into place.

Roger Snider’s “Big Rig” Custom Portfolios

Posted in Print Portfolios / Promos by D. Currier | Tags: , , ,

Portfolio cover designs should reflect the personality of the individual and the work that’s included inside the book. This portfolio for photographer Roger Snider, is a perfect example.

“Roger Snider approached us a few months back to create a new photography portfolio for his niche specialty: shooting big rig trucks. After some soul searching, our photo editor/portfolio consultant Sean Stone came up with with an interesting, custom approach to the portfolio, and one that involved skulls and flames. I asked Sean Stone a few questions about his approach to the edit and the physical books themselves, which are fun to hold because of their glossy, metallic surfaces and custom-painted design.” – Neil Binkley, Wonderful Machine

“My goal is to make a book that shows a consistent style, unique imagery that brands the photographer, and also has marketability.” – Sean Stone, Photo Editor/Portfolio Consultant
