When San-Francisco based photographer JJ Casas approached me about designing a logo for his new venture, Dr. Camera, I was immediately excited about the project. JJ’s idea was to offer his professional know-how to help folks who aren’t photographers take better pictures.
JJ says, ” I chose the name Dr. Camera because I joked with a friend who recently asked “What camera should I get?” that I felt like a doctor prescribing him the right solution. I had to ask many questions to try and figure out what was most important to him to figure out what would be the best camera for his needs. And then it hit me: I realized that there are others who are just like my friend who have photography-related questions and I booked this domain immediately.”
JJ wanted to have fun with the medical theme which sounded good to me. I started researching medical logos which were all pretty similar and dry. Then I had an idea. Since JJ is Dr. Camera I thought about literally making him the face of the brand and creating an illustrated character of him. Pushing the idea further and playing up the camera angle, I proposed replacing the light a surgeon straps to his head with a camera. JJ liked the idea and I moved forward with it. The tricky part was capturing JJ’s likeness, but with his distinctive hair, mustache and dimples I knew I had a lot to work with!
