With some trepidation you open Justin Poulsen‘s latest promo. It is indeed squishy and wrapped in gauze. It’s paired with a card and some smart copy. Once you realize what it is, you can’t help but laugh and think it’s awesome. I’ve seen a lot of thumb drive promotions over the years, but nothing quite like this one. Justin shows off his unique skills with this promo as he does most of my own prop work – something he wanted to highlight. He told me, “I did indeed make the thumb myself! I do most of my own prop work, which I wanted to highlight with this promo. Many times the artistry is overlooked, as the general public is quick to write everything off as CGI these days. To sum the process up quickly I made a mold of my thumb using silicone and then sprayed the interior of that mold with urethane. I then cast several thumbs from that mold with the same platinum cure silicone rubber (with a low durometer for that squishiness). Afterwards I painted using hand mixed solutions of FW ink + alcohol. To seal in the pigmentation I airbrushed the thumbs with a solution of naphtha and silicone.”
I asked Justin who he was sending these to and what the feedback has been like. He told me, “The list of recipients is diverse. It includes Creative Directors, Art buyers, and Art Directors from Canada, USA, and the UK. The initial response has been tremendous. One of my favorite emails so far went something like this: “Great promo. It made me ill…do you have any more of them?” Evoking a feeling like that is special and speaks to some of my darker work. Building that association is priceless.”
