Benjamin Flynn is a photographer, currently studying at the Brooks Institute in Santa Barbara, CA. He’s set to graduate in August. And yet, he’s already thinking about his marketing and self-promotion. He’s already active in a professional world where the commercial market for young people is, let’s face it – tough to break into.
Ben sent out 60 promo packages to different art directors, brands, magazines and photo agents/reps across the country that fit his targeted market. So far he’s been able to have numerous over-the-phone conversations with those select people and a few office meetings about his book with good feedback from each.
He says, “With a lot of the industry using small direct mail pieces and email marketing, I thought this was the best way to market myself differently from what most are doing in the commercial world. I’ve also had several current clients and the traffic they have brought me ask me for copies. As of right now, I’m kind of going into the unknown because this is my first major promotion in the commercial world which is really great and a big learning experience for me leading into the future.”
Whether it’s for an internship or paid gig, you’ve got to get your materials together – and look and act like a professional. Ben put in the extra effort and created terrific, professional looking promotional materials. Right from the get go, this tells someone he’s got ambition, skills, a great work ethic, and knows how to get the job done.
